N Fox has sold his interest in the logging and milling business at Pino Grand to W McEwen a capitalist recently from the East The transfer of 21,000 000 ft of logs together with the machinery for a saw-mill, mentioned in our last issue was concluded last Monday It means a great lumbering enterprise, on the timber tract of the American River Land and Lumber Company, but on lines of less resistance than those upon which that corporation experimented The mill will be pushed to completion m about one month and will finish about 10,000 ft per day–for shipment to Sacramento and for a probable box and door factory in this cut which may anticipate a renewal of interest in Pino Grande.

Suit to Enjoin Sale of bonds
Nicholas Fox of this city has brought suit against the Board of Supervisors of El Dorado County to secure a perpetual injunction against the selling of the recently voted Court House bonds on the ground that the proceedings leading up to such proposed sale have not been in accordance with law. Heller, Powers & Ehrman, and Butler and Swister, are attorneys for the plaintiff and this action will delay the erection of a new Court House indefinitely, and if successful, will require that the election and all proceedings thereunder be had over again. Judge Shields came up from Sacramento on Thursday to hear argument on the order to show cause, and intimated from the bench that the petitioner seemed to be entitled to the relief prayed for, unless a recent act of the legislature has the effect to change the law applicable to such matters. As certain amendments to the petition were allowed to be made, the decision is reserved and the matter submitted.

There has been work and plenty of it for the architects and carpenters of town in the number of building improvements during the last few weeks. The beautiful home of N. Fox and wife on Coloma Street has been undergoing a complete remodeling, and, situatated as it is upon a green slope and surrounded by spacious ground, now presents the most imposing appearance of any of our city residences. The house has been strengthened by concrete foundations, a bay window has been added on the north side and two dormer windows in the attic. In front, is a 9’x’36 porch, the columns, seats and entire frontage being constructed of selected stone from this county, gathered near White Rock. While the most attractive feature is the fireplace which is composed of crystals and fancy rock selected from different parts of the United States by Mr. and Mrs. Fox in their travels. Another convenience is a large screened back porch. Chas. Nichols has had charge of the carpenter work, and the Bliss brothers are doing the painting. The house has been cream color with white trimmings surmounted by a slate colored roof.

Placerville Will Celebrate
At its regular meeting Monday evening, Placerville Aerie No. 889. Fraternal Order of Eagles, decided to undertake the management of a Fourth of July celebration in this city. The cardinal principles of this order are Liberty. Truth. Justice and Equality, and it is therefore fitting that, in the absence of any move on the part of the city government, the Chamber of Commerce or other civic body to inaugurate a celebration that the Eagles should take the matter up, and now that there is a recognized head to the movement it is to be hoped that all will enter into the effort with patriotic spirit. A general committee consisting of S. B. Wilson, Guy E Wentworth, Chas. W. Ball. R. M. Levy and J. J. Lowenstein was selected with authority to name such sub-committees as are needed to look after the various features that go to make up an enjoyable, patriotic and appropriate celebration. This general committee held a meeting at the court house Tuesday evening and named the following subcommittees: To solicit financial assistance. N. Fox, Geo. Rieber, J. W. Shanklin. LISTEN TO MR. EDNER
Just a line to the people of El Dorado county to let them know I am back from my trip through Oregon and Washington where I distributed literature of my own and of the Chamber of Commerce. I saw many beautiful places but nothing that looked as good to me as El Dorado county. We traveled 2,500 miles, my car is a 4-door Ford sedan and Nick Fox’s is an 8-cylinder Peerless; the Ford made 20 miles to the gallon of gas and we ate supper every night at the same table with the Foxes. We traveled as high as 250 miles in one day. Nick visited his folks in Portland and I visited my nephew in Astoria. We camped one night in a beautiful park with many other campers and there were some pet bears there. After everything was quiet, a bear put his head in my tent door and made a great noise, my wife sat up in bed and made a great noise too, and then ran out of the side of the tent! I thought I would stay in bed but when my wife got out of bed, the bear started to get in bed and I gave him the whole tent, didn’t even stop to see if he was webfooted I heard a lady holler ‘Get up quick, John, he is running away with our ham’ I had often heard it said that it pays to advertise, but I believe it pays to snore as the bear never went into Nick Fox’s tent.

Usually the first to make a claim or boast doesn’t have a chance. The uptake of someone who can do it better, make it faster, stay at it longer, or outdo in any other manner, is so quick as to be almost startling. But so, far Nick Fox’s claim of last week has gone uncontested. –
Nick claims to have subscribed to the Mountain Democrat longer than any other living person—going on 64 consecutive years. His is a record we’re mighty proud of, and until someone can oust him, Nick will retain his rank as our No. 1 subscriber. Any challenges?

Nicholas Fox, 94, retired businessman and civic leader, died Monday in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Memory Chapel, with Reverend John Dunlop and the Masonic lodge officiating. Burial will be in Union cemetery.
Mr. Fox was a native of Wisconsin. He came to California in 1888, settling in Siskiyou county and moving to El Dorado county three years later. For 16 years he operated the old El Dorado Saloon.
For 20 years during the early part of this century he served on the city council, four years of which (1916 to 1920) was as mayor. Among his other early day activities was serving as director for the El Dorado Irrigation district, which he served for four years.
In 1917 he was named vice president of the El Dorado County Bank, which was later purchased by the Bank of America. He was a director when the firm changed hands and was a member of the banks board of directors when he died.
Mr. Fox was also active in organizations in the community. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Eagles and the Order of the Eastern Star; and was also a member of the Foresters of America. One of this most recent boasts was of being a continuous subscriber to the Mountain Democrat for the longest-known length of time (ever since coming to town).
The Fox home on Coloma street for many years was among the well-known show places of the community, but after the death of his wife in 1944, he sold the old home, reconstructed another building on the property and has lived there with his niece, Margaret B. Marshall. He is also survived by several other nieces and some nephews.
